Meet our Group Walk Volunteer, Emma!

Meet our Group Walk Volunteer, Emma!

It’s National Learning Disabilities Week 2024 and we want to celebrate one of our fantastic Group Walk Volunteer’s, Emma Stiffe. Emma is a brilliant, valuable member of our team; leading our group walks, registering participants and getting people talking. In fact - we could not run our service without volunteers like Emma…who also happens to have a learning disability

Read Emma’s blog on why she volunteers for CareDogs and how organisation’s can support adults with learning disabilities

My name is Emma, and I live with my cat and dog.  I’ve lived in Croydon all my life and i’ve been volunteering for various local causes for the past four years.  I live with a learning disability however, I have lots of skills to give back to my community.

I saw the volunteer position advertised through my local volunteer centre newsletter (Croydon Voluntary Action) and being an avid animal lover, it appealed to me straight away! I love meeting new people and their dogs and I love getting out and walking so it’s perfect for me.  I am in charge of taking the register for each of our group walks and making sure everybody is feeling happy and included.

I feel very much part of the team. People really understand my disability and support me to carry out my role by giving me clear instructions and meet up together ahead of a walk. I really enjoy chatting with new people and I love the CareDogs Volunteer WhatApp group - we swap photos of our pets all the time!

It’s a great community, great fun and we’re helping people.
