Meet Poppy, our CareDogs' Dog of the Month and her human volunteer, Neil

We sat down with both Poppy and her human Neil, to find out more about one of our latest CareDogs recruits!

Poppy

My ideal day would involve... Running up the garden, barking when I get to the end, as I can smell foxes! Then mainly sleeping, eating, going for a walk, sleeping, eating and sleeping again!

My favourite treat is... I love every treat, but if pushed, it's my dental stick I have after every meal.

Scratch me here please: I love everywhere, but I always stand and stay still when scratched on the side above my back legs.

My life motto is... Eat, sleep and be happy.

Neil

Tell us a bit about yourself - I am born and bred from South Croydon, most of my life has been spent there. I live there with my wife Nicky, and of course Poppy. Close by live my two grown up children, which is very handy if we go away, as we have very willing ‘Poppy sitters’ near by! I worked for just under 36 years, before taking early retirement two years ago. Now I like to spend my time, taking Poppy for walks, lots of holidays, and playing or watching many sports.

How did you hear about CareDogs and what made you want to volunteer with us? My wife spotted an advert for CareDogs, and she knew I was looking to do some volunteering work. It appealed straight away, I love walking Poppy, and we go for walks every day, so in my mind no better way, to help someone and also take Poppy out at the same time!

How was your first meetup? Where did you go? I have just had my first walk, which went very well, Poppy was a star. We met in Lloyd park in South Croydon, a lovely park, and hopefully a potential venue in the future for a get together and a group walk!

What do you hope to get out of your volunteering? Ideally I want to help someone. Loneliness is one of the hardest things, and if spending an hour or so every few weeks with someone helps in any small way, that really is something we can all be proud of.
